Majestic Meteora
One place that really captured my interest in Greece is Meteora. It’s up in Northern Greece and hard to get to for a day trip. We needed an overnight there. We had tried to delay our check-in to Greece the first time around by one day so we could stop in Meteora for an overnight. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for our hosts. We decided since we were going back to Struga for two weeks, rather than driving up north and spending a night, we would hit it up on our way back into Greece from Struga the second time. And that’s exactly what we did.

Meteora was spectacular. Exactly as spectacular as I had anticipated. There are so many impressive, large rock formations throughout the area. There are six monasteries up on top of these various rocks, though how they built them up there all those years ago is beyond my comprehension!

We made it to town at 3:00 pm with plenty of time to explore the area. We drove around the area to see the rocks from various angles. We drove up the rocks where there were roads, to check out the impressive views from above. We hiked up where there were steps to a monastery but no road, to check out the monastery itself and the impressive views. We went for dinner at a little taverna with a stunning view of the rock formations. After dinner and a walk around the town we were staying in, Kalampaka, we went back up to the rocks and watched the most spectacular sunset.

After a long day on the road and exploring Meteora, we all slept very well! We were sure to get up early to head back out into the quaint town we were staying in for breakfast at a little bakery café before the long drive down to our next home base in Valira. Paying $30 CAD for four croissants, two coffees, and two orange juices was a stark reminder that we were back in Greece!
Our stop in Meteora was brief, but we managed to explore quite a bit and left there very satisfied. I’m glad we made the time to make the trip to this incredible spot. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it in the past, nor will I in the future! A truly gorgeous area in Greece.
